Michael Miu gets reminder from Jamie Chik about 22nd Wedding Anniversary
How many 30 years are there in a lifetime? As one of the HK entertainment industry’s model couples, actor Michael Miu (苗僑偉) and his wife [former actress] Jamie Chik (戚美珍) fell in love back in 1982 while filming the TVB series “You Only Live Twice” 《飛越十八層》-- January 9th marks the 22nd wedding anniversary for this ‘golden’ couple who has remained together through thick and think for the past 30 years [TN: they dated for 8 years before getting married in 1990]. Even though Michael is currently filming in Xiamen [China], he does not have to worry about feeling lonely, as his wife Jamie flew over to visit him on set this week. On their anniversary day, the couple celebrated the occasion by having dinner with the filming crew, with Michael giving Jamie the anniversary gift he had prepared for her -- a bouquet of flowers. This loving couple is truly the envy of those around them!
Every year for the past 22 years, Michael has always given Jamie a bouquet of flowers on their wedding anniversary – though this year was no different in that aspect, Jamie pointed out that there actually was one thing different from previous years: “In the past, every year of our wedding anniversary, we would have a celebratory dinner with a few of our close ‘couple’ friends in HK, however this year, we celebrated with a group of young friends in Xiamen. Actually, Michael is pretty good about remembering our anniversary every year – but even if he were to forget, I would surely ‘remind’ him! Like this year for example – one night, on impulse, I wrote the number ‘22’ on a piece of paper and handed it to him with the intention of ‘reminding’ him about our 22nd wedding anniversary. He took one look at the paper and asked me ‘What?’ – then he turned the paper over, looked at it, and asked me again ‘What?’ When he saw me smiling without answering, he then said: ‘Oh! Hey, I remember – you don’t need to remind me!’ See, Michael never forgets our anniversary!” Asked whether she purposefully flew to Xiamen to celebrate with Michael, Jamie replied: “In HK, I don’t have any work obligations currently and there isn’t anyone to keep me company anyway, so I figured why not go to Xiamen and take care of Michael – plus it’s a way of enjoying life!”
Even though they have already been married for 22 years, Michael and Jamie’s deep affection and love for one another is akin to that of a newlywed couple. Towards this, Jamie expressed that their relationship really isn’t much different from ordinary couples – when they were young, they would argue a lot, but after being together for so long, they grew to understand that the key to a lasting relationship involves mutually accommodating one another, being tolerant and accepting of one another, and also respect: “During our youth, when we were dating, we worked together and we also managed a business together. Now our kids [TN: daughter Phoebe is 20 and son Murphy is 18] are all grown up and continuing their schooling abroad, so all that’s left is the two of us to keep each other company. We rely on each other mutually, as we will be accompanying each other on the long road ahead and into the future.”
In their 30 years together, Michael and Jamie have never run out of things to talk about. Towards this, Jamie smiled and expressed that because she and Michael talk about everything under the sun -- even pointless, silly things – they never have to worry about growing distant from each other: “Some married couples who’ve been together for a long time end up running out of things to say to each other – after all, being together for so many years, you’ve pretty much said everything you want to say – so it’s no surprise that the relationship eventually grows distant. But Michael and I are different in that we talk about everything, even unimportant silly things – even with things like TV series and movies, we could go on and on about it! Actually, I feel that this helps to enliven and enhance our relationship as a married couple.”
Currently, Michael is rushing to complete his work in the Mainland and it is anticipated that filming will wrap prior to Chinese New Year. After that, the couple has plans for a trip to the U.S. and Canada to visit their children and will return to HK after the CNY holiday.

Weibo Fever # 9: Opening Performance of "Shrimp Crazy Family" Stage Play
Here's an awesome article recapping the opening night performance of the highly anticipated stage play, "Shrimp Crazy Family" (refer to the previous few posts for details).
The article pretty much says it all, but I also wanted to share some of the behind the scenes pictures and other info from the Weibos of the various 'stars' who participated in the show (majority of them have Weibo accounts, so there is tons of stuff on it).
Here's some behind the scenes stuff that wasn't in the article (which I gathered from Weibo):
.—Even though Michael Miu and Felix Wong did not have to perform on opening night, both of them were present the entire time, primarily backstage. Felix said that he and Michael had very important roles as “阿四”, helping to ‘take care’ of the cast (getting them coffee, tea, water, food, etc.,)…basically, they were ‘busboys’…LOL!
.—The “Shrimp Crazy Family” stage play actually has no affiliation with TVB at all. It was organized by Louie Castro and Jamie Chik as a reunion of sorts for them as well as the artists they worked with back in the day.
.-- Watching / reading all the updates about the show on Weibo and on TV really brought back alot of memories for me. And seeing how 'united' all the artists were (many of the artists who weren't performing until later on still came to support or even help out the cast / crew backstage) almost brought tears to my eyes. This was how the HK entertainment industry used to be in the 80s (before it spiraled downhill in the next 2 decades) and it saddens me to think that we may never see such unity and coming together of veteran artists again. This is partly why I'm taking the time to write up blog posts about each of the performances....I hope to cherish this 'trip down memory lane' as long as I can!
Anyways, hope you enjoy the article and the pictures!

Opening performance of “Shrimp Crazy Family”: Andy Lau and Eric Tsang ad-lib dialogue, make fun of Jamie Chik’s figure; Joey Yung is publicly ‘touched’ by Meg Lam
The stage production “Shrimp Crazy Family” starring Lo Hoi Pang, Meg Lam, Jamie Chik, and Louie Castro, had its debut show in HK day before yesterday. The opening performance was truly a ‘star-studded’ event, both on stage and off. The special ‘mystery’ guests for opening night were Andy Lau and Joey Yung, who, together with Dodo Cheng, Eric Tsang, Annie Liu, and Elvina Kong, made audiences laugh onstage. Off-stage, many artists came to support the show, including Liza Wang, Michael Miu [technically part of the crew], Michael Tse, Bosco Wong, Chin Kar Lok, Angela Tong, etc.
‘Squinty Eyes’ Lo Hoi Pang continued his comical ways, speaking his dialogue in ‘rhyme’ and also ad-libbing all night – occasionally, he would also incorporate his famous imitation routines, pretending to be Roman Tam singing his hit song《激光中》. When Squinty Eyes’s “arch-enemy” – Meg Lam’s ‘Big Shark’ -- appeared on stage, she headed straight for Pang Gor, purposefully bumping her head repeatedly against his, causing the audiences to laugh non-stop.
Years ago, when Meg Lam was filming a show for ATV, one of the boards on the set accidentally fell on her, causing a head injury that makes it difficult for her to concentrate for long periods of time. Therefore, the script was specially written to give her time to rest backstage in between acts – indeed, while resting on a sofa backstage, she actually fell asleep. It wasn’t until Joey Yung – who played the role of a 3D song goddess – came on stage, then Meg immediately returned on stage, continuing to ‘battle’ with Lo Hoi Pang and steal his scenes. While Joey sang, Pang Gor did numerous funny routines, including purposefully breaking a table to make audiences laugh, while Meg swept her hands around Joey’s body – luckily, Joey was able to contain her laughter and finish singing her song.
When it came time for Eric Tsang and Andy Lau to come on stage, the ‘playfulness’ escalated – the two of them played the roles of Jamie’s ex-boyfriends who ‘showed up’ to fight for her affection. During the skit, there was a scene where Eric and Pang Gor were exchanging a check, however Meg suddenly ran onto the stage, accidentally tripping and falling on the floor – of course, the 2 comedians [Eric and Pang Gor] took advantage of the situation to poke fun at Meg, even saying some curse words and making audiences roar with laughter. Andy Lau appeared near the end of the show – not only did he perform a song (one of the climaxes of the night), he also ad-libbed the dialogue for his role. He pointed out that Louie Castro [who plays Jamie’s husband ‘Shrimp Boy’] cannot compare to himself and Eric: “One is tall, the other is short, one is handsome, the other is ugly”, which threw Louie off and caused him to forget some of his lines. After that, Andy and Eric ‘ganged up’ on Jamie, mocking her and making fun of her figure by saying that she had ‘sagging’ parts.
During interviews after the show, both Andy and Joey indicated that they were happy to be able to participate and had a lot of fun. Asked about being publicly ‘touched’ by Meg, Joey laughed and replied: “It felt like being searched at the airport, but doesn’t matter, as long as everyone had fun. These ‘memories’ are once in a lifetime!” Andy revealed that prior to the show, he had requested to play the part of Jamie’s ex-boyfriend, as he wanted to get the chance to have some fun with acting: “Originally, I was supposed to play a 3D song god, but I wanted to have some dialogue, so I took on the role of one of the ex-boyfriends instead.” Jamie Chik indicated that she was already anticipating that there would be a lot of ad-libbing from the artists and did not mind that Andy made fun of her figure.
Meg Lam admitted that during the performance, she wasn’t 100% alert, which resulted in her nodding off onstage: “Because of my illness, I get sleepy easily, but sometimes, upon hearing Pang Gor’s funny dialogue, I’m laughing so hard that I’m not able to sleep. I will definitely rest more the next couple days in preparation for the remaining 3 shows.”
When Pang Gor was asked about ‘cursing’ onstage during the performance, he refused to admit it, instead saying: “When did I curse? I was following the script exactly!”

Follow up post to Weibo Fever #7: "The Shrimp Family" Stage Production
Here's an article about the stage play that I mentioned a couple posts earlier (Weibo Fever #7) that will actually be starting up in HK tomorrow.
The article is hilarious, so I figured I would share it here as well.
Hope you enjoy it!

Michael Miu collaborates with Jamie Chik again after more than 2 decades; will portray her ‘ex’-boyfriend in stage production of “Shrimp Crazy Family”
Long-running TVB variety show E.Y.T.[Enjoy Yourself Tonight] (歡樂今宵), which ran from November 1967 to October 1994, is a classic in HK television history. One of the classic skits from the show, “Shrimp Crazy Family” (蝦仔爹哋), will be turned into a stage play for charity, complete with musical numbers as well as dancing.
Yesterday, the cast of the stage version of “Shrimp Crazy Family” gathered for one of the final dress rehearsals. True to its comedic roots, there has been many a funny moment in almost every one of the rehearsals for “Shrimp Crazy Family” and yesterday was no exception. When some of the other cast members – including (veteran comic actor) Lo Hoi Pang, Jamie Chik, Michael Miu, and Felix Wong -- arrived late for yesterday’s rehearsal, veteran actress Meg Lam, who reprises her role as ‘Big Shark’ (大白鯊), for the stage version, jokingly ‘accused’ the 4 of being ‘big shots’ who purposefully made a ‘little actress’ like her wait for them. This garnered quite a few laughs from those present, both cast and crew alike.
Jamie Chik [who reprises her role as Ah Zhan, the wife of Louie Castro’s character ‘Shrimp Boy’] expressed that so far, the general public’s reaction to the stage version is quite good and all 4 shows are sold out – some audiences even asked if they will be doing a tour of the production in the U.S.! Michael Miu expressed that in the stage production, Felix Wong, Eric Tsang, Nat Chan, and himself will play the fictional role of Jamie’s ex-boyfriend – he revealed that each actor’s portrayal of the character will be markedly different. He jokingly stated: “I will be incorporating many of the same ‘tricks’ that helped me win Jamie’s heart 25 years ago. At the time, the only person I viewed as a ‘rival’ was Louie Castro!” Upon hearing this, Meg Lam immediately ‘revealed’ that due to the fact that the couple [Michael and Jamie] has not worked together in over 20 years, their performances were a bit awkward – even Jamie admitted that every time she looked at Michael, she couldn’t help bursting into laughter and therefore would forget her lines. Laughing, Michael responded: “Yea, she would ‘glare’ at me the same way that she does at home!”
As for Felix Wong, who has not participated in a stage play in over 20 years, he expressed that he has been very busy lately – in addition to rehearsing for the production, he has also taken over the administrative duties on the Celebrity Soccer Team that his fellow teammate, the late Wan Zhi Keung, used to oversee. Asked if he had time to accept other job offers, Felix replied: “Of course! Being able to make ‘real money’ is important. In fact, I have already accepted a high level, grand production film and will also be going back to the Mainland to shoot a series at the end of September – it’s a series that will be set in the post-modern era. I accepted the series with the one condition that they cannot ask me to shave my head.”
In related news, Miss HK contestant (didn’t make it to the finals) Janey Yan was invited to participate in the “Shrimp Crazy Family” production by her mother’s good friend, Jamie Chik. Earlier, there were rumors that Janey was one of the women involved in the situation with Him Law, to which she responded that she had nothing to do with the situation and emphasized that she and Him are only friends.
The article is hilarious, so I figured I would share it here as well.
Hope you enjoy it!

Weibo Fever # 7: The Return of a Classic – E.Y.T. Skit “The Shrimp Family (蝦仔爹哋)”
70s/80s TVB fans take note! Those of you who miss TVB’s famous long-running flagship variety show “Enjoy Yourself Tonight” (known as E.Y.T for short), which ran for 27 years (from November 1967 to October 1994) are in for a treat – one of the most popular skits from the show is coming to a theater near you! Well, sort of….
Long time TVB fans may remember “The Shrimp Family (蝦仔爹哋)”, a hilarious skit within the E.Y.T. program that starred veteran comedic actor Lo Hoi Pang, comedic (and serious) actress Meg Lam, singer/actor Louie Castro, singer/actor Tam Bing Mun, and actresses Jamie Chik, Helena Law, and Sandra Ng (main cast) plus cameos from many famous HK stars throughout the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. The skit played out live in front of audiences every week (the E.Y.T. program aired every night, Monday to Friday, back then) and much of the dialogue was ad-libbed right on the spot by the actors and actresses (especially the immensely talented and funny Lo Hoi Pang) each time.
I pretty much grew up watching E.Y.T. and I remember laughing so hard at the skits (especially “The Shrimp Family”) that my insides would hurt afterwards! And it was definitely a lot of fun to see which famous celebrity would ‘guest star’ each time and also see how Lo Hoi Pang would make up dialogue on the spot and ‘trick’ the other artists, causing them to burst out laughing instead of saying their lines (that’s the beauty of doing the skit live!). The skit was definitely one of the highlights of E.Y.T. and will go down in HK entertainment history as one of the “classic” skits of all time.
As a treat for us ‘old-timer’ fans, the cast of “The Shrimp Family” will be re-uniting next this month (September 20th to 23rd) and the skit will be turned into a stage play, complete with musical numbers, singing, and dancing. And that’s not all – due to Louie Castro and Jamie Chik’s connections in the industry, they have invited many of their famous friends from within the HK entertainment industry to participate in the stage play, taking on cameo roles!
In addition to the regular cast consisting of Lo Hoi Pang, Meg, Jamie, and Louie, plus ‘newer generation’ artists Hanjin Tan, Jerry Lamb, and Oscar Leung, here’s just a partial list of some of the ‘guests’ who will also be participating (I’m sure that long-time TVB watchers will recognize most, if not all, the names): Dodo Cheng, Teresa Mo, Felix Wong, Michael Miu, Eric Tsang, Nat Chan, Susanna Kwan, Annie Liu, Elvina Kong, Michelle Yim, Yu Mo Lian, and Mak Jing Ting (formerly known as Mak Lai Hung). It was recently announced that a few famous singers will also join the cast with cameo roles, including Eason Chan, Miriam Yeung, and Sammi Cheng.
Wow such a stellar veteran cast and so many great guest stars, this will definitely be an awesome event! Just reading the cast list and seeing all of the ‘behind the scenes’ pictures (as well as reading all the articles and posts on Weibo) already made me feel as though I have been transported back to the ‘Golden Era’ of the 1980s and definitely brings back so many awesome memories! My only regret is that I don’t live in HK, so I won’t be able to watch the stage play live (darn!) – I guess all I can do is read up on it and also hope (more like pray hard) that they will end up doing a tour of sorts and perhaps come to the U.S. to perform (pretty please with a cherry on top?!?!?!). NOTE TO THOSE WHO LIVE IN HK: If you’re a long-time TVB fan and/or HK entertainment follower, you have to go watch this!
Anyway, here are a few pictures from the behind the scenes dress rehearsals and practices in preparation for the ‘main event’ in a few weeks (courtesy of Louie Castro’s Weibo).
There will definitely be more follow up posts to come on this...but in the meantime, enjoy!!

Interview with Michael Miu: Letting go of the past, living in the present, and looking to the future
Here's another great interview that I came across -- of course, since I grew up watching TVB series, I was a 'fan' of the Five Tigers. Michael was one of my favorites back in the 80s (though it's really hard to pick a favorite among those five, since they each have their own unique talents)and since it's rare to find an in-depth interview with the 80s actors, I definitely wouldn't pass up this one! :-)
Just my two cents regarding the article:
.-- I like Michael's outlook on life. With the entertainment industry being such a pressure cooker, it's definitely a good thing to have a positive attitude.
.-- Not surprisingly, Michael is often asked about Barbara in interviews and such (and this particular one is no exception). Despite how much he hopes for 'bygones to be bygones', I doubt that people are going to stop asking him. Either way, I definitely agree with him that the whole situation was a huge tragedy and no matter what our individual opinions are of why Barbara committed suicide, nothing is going to change that fact.
.-- It's interesting that alot of people didn't feel that Michael Miu and Jamie Chik's marriage would last (probably because of Michael's 'image' from his many ancient series from the 80s). Whatever the case, they have been married for 21 years now and their relationship is still as strong as ever! Who says that relationships in the entertainment industry don't last long?
.-- Aww, the part where the article talks about how the Five Tigers came to be brought back so many memories! And Michael's comparison of how the environment was back then to how it is now is so true!
.-- Having been in the business world for more than a decade myself, I can definitely relate to Michael's sentiments in terms of how complicated and stressful the business sector can be. I admire his ability to be able to give up such a lucrative business and return to his acting roots -- it's not an easy decision to make at all!

Interview with Michael Miu: Letting go of the past, living in the present, and looking to the future

He likes people to call him ‘Third Brother’ (三哥), however it seems that people are already more used to calling him ‘Yeung Hong’ (杨康) [TN: his character’s name in 《Legend of the Condor Heroes》]. No matter how much he tries to break away from the ‘Five Tigers’ era, he is unable to avoid the constant questions and fond memories that many people still have towards that era. Throughout his life and career, he has experienced many peaks and valleys, highs and lows – starting as an obscure actor and eventually making a name for himself in the entertainment industry, he later became a businessman, earning millions in the business sector. Recently, with his return to the entertainment industry, it can be said that he has now come full circle. He is Michael Miu, and this week, his new Mainland series《金枝玉葉》[loosely translated as “Noble Beauty”] has officially premiered on CCTV-8 throughout Mainland China. [TN: The series is considered the Mainland version of TVB’s 2008 series 《The Gem of Life》]
Currently 50 years old, the passing of time hasn’t carved too many wrinkles in Michael’s forehead – rather, we see elements of calmness, wisdom, and ease. He doesn’t like to look back on the past, as doing so halts progress forward; instead, he hopes that from this moment on, audiences will get to know him as someone who enjoys life and views filming series as his way of having some ‘playful fun’.
A tragic and unfortunate accident
Not only was the 1983 version of 《Legend of the Condor Heroes》 one of the earliest HK series to become popular in the Mainland, it was also an important symbol of the success of HK series in that era. In the prime of their careers back then, the stars of the series are no longer the ‘young kids’ they once were – among them, some have enjoyed the fruits of their popularity, some have retired to a more peaceful life, and some still continue to silently toil….but for many of us, the one we are least able to forget is the one who currently resides in Heaven – our ‘Wong Yung’, Barbara Yung. Such a young and delicate life with a promising career, tragically cut short, leaving behind much grief and a feeling of what could have been…
Back then, none of Barbara’s friends ever imagined that she would choose such an extreme path of ending her own life. 26 years later, upon hearing mention of his close friend Barbara, Michael sighs and states: “Originally, she was such a cheerful, vibrant girl. Whenever I filmed with her, I rarely treated her as a girl – she was like a good ‘brother’ of mine! No one ever thought that she would end her life in such manner.” It is widely understood and believed by many people that Barbara committed suicide due to relationship issues, however it less widely known that perhaps she never really intended to leave this world. As Michael himself states: “I believe that she originally wasn’t intending to die, perhaps she just wanted to ‘scare’ a certain person – the unfortunate part is that it went too far and turned into a tragic accident. It’s a huge tragedy and loss – we all miss her very much.”
Admires wife’s unwavering devotion to taking care of their family
In the series 《金枝玉葉》, Michael plays a rich real estate developer, which coincidentally draws some similarities to his former real life status as the “King of Eyeglasses” [TN: after Michael left the entertainment industry back in the late 80s,/early 90s he went into the lucrative business of selling eyeglasses and earned lots of money.] All the complications of surviving in the business world – including the fickleness of the private sector and the often pressure-filled climb up the corporate ladder – that the characters in the series encounter are all too familiar to someone like Michael, who has toiled in the business sector for over a decade. However, what attracted Michael to the series the most is the unwavering love and devotion that the main male character has towards the main female character – a love and devotion that is very similar to his real life relationship with his wife of more than 20 years, Jamie Chik. In an industry where breaking up is just as common as starting a relationship, there were very few people who believed that this couple would truly be able to remain together for so long. Back during that ‘Golden Era’ of TVB, there were many celebrity couples who ‘loved vigorously, but broke up thoroughly’ – looking back now, Michael and Jamie’s relationship is one of the few that has withstood the test of time.
Michael expressed that what he admires most about his wife is her “unwavering devotion to taking care of the family, taking care of the kids, and taking care of me.” He further states: “One of the most important things in a relationship is mutual respect as well as tolerance of each other’s flaws and weaknesses – not only in a relationship between husband and wife, but also between friends and co-workers, it should be this way. Each person has their own unique personalities and it’s important for one to be able to tolerate the other’s flaws in order to become friends; the same concept applies in a marriage – when you take a step back, the sea and the sky become boundless.”
Did everything without complaint
The series 《金枝玉葉》explores a wide range of real life issues, such as ‘wealthy second generation’, inflation of real estate prices, etc., -- the most interesting by far is how the series inadvertently brings to light one of today’s ‘unwritten rules’ of the entertainment industry – the fact that young artists are oftentimes required to give up their dreams and even their dignity in order to get to where they want to be in the shortest amount of time. Looking back to the HK entertainment industry of 30 years ago, the young artists of that generation were a lot more naïve and simple-minded – as Michael describes it: “We were just a group of young boys with nothing to our names – no experience, no money, nothing – all we had was a type of stubborn enthusiasm. Everyday, we would put our heads down and throw ourselves into filming series – we didn’t understand anything about fighting for certain privileges, striving for fame, or adhering to unwritten rules.”
In the early 80s, five energetic youth – Tony Leung, Andy Lau, Felix Wong, Michael Miu, and Kent Tong -- caught the eye of certain people at TVB and quickly, the company decided to push their careers forward. In 1983, during one of TVB’s flagship large-scale variety shows《星光熠熠劲争辉》, the 5 youth formulated a group called ‘the Five Tiger Generals’ (五虎將) and performed a series of acrobatic stunts on stage – the highlight of the performance was Andy Lau lying on a bench and having a huge slab of rock shattered on his chest [TN: 80s TVB fanatics will surely remember that famous performance]. Thinking back to those days, Michael fondly states: “Back then, we were grateful that the company gave us the opportunity to perform, so we threw our heart and soul into it, with the goal of doing the best job possible. For instance, there were certain stunts that people thought we would never be able to do, such as backflips, somersaults, and of course, the shattering of the rock – these stunts that were usually undertaken by professional stuntmen, we went and practiced them, then performed for the audiences. At the time, all of us were full of energy and enthusiasm and were happy to have the opportunity to perform for the audiences – we did it willingly and without complaint.”
When people think of Michael Miu, they think of the year 1983
The glory days of the ‘Five Tigers’ era officially ended in 1991 when the action film 《五虎将之决裂》[English title《The Tigers》] debuted in theaters – from that moment on, the 5 Tigers went down different career as well as life paths. The film also marked the last time (and only time) that the Five Tigers reunited to collaborate in a movie.
Not surprisingly, when people think of the title of the movie, they can’t help but draw comparisons to real life and wonder whether these 5 Tiger brothers really accumulated years of resentment and grudges toward each other offscreen. Hearing this, Michael laughs and states: “Well, the title of the film does sound like there’s some hidden meaning and I could understand why people would think that way – however, the movie was not a reflection of real life. We never had any conflicts or breaking off of that nature – rather, we ended up going down different paths because our goals were different. That’s the reality of the entertainment industry -- each of us have our own busy careers and may not see each other for years, yet when we do get the chance to meet up, it’s as though we never separated. Even throughout the many years when I went into business, I never lost contact with my friends in the entertainment industry – Eric Tsang, Andy Lau, Alan Tam, etc., we’re all good friends and we never ‘broke off’ any relationships.”
A lot of times, Michael doesn’t feel like talking about those ‘glory days’ of the past: “For a lot of people, when they think of me, they think of 1983 and the Five Tigers – everyone always asks me and sometimes I feel a bit helpless. All of that is in the past, there’s no point dwelling on it anymore. Rather than remembering me as ‘Yeung Hong’, I actually hope that people will call me ‘Third Brother’ when they see me. If everyone started calling me ‘Yeung Hong’ all the time, I don’t know how I should respond – all of that happened in the 80s. I feel that if we’re constantly thinking about the past, it’s as though we are constantly stuck in time and not moving forward. I like living in the present and looking to the future – the way I am now is the ‘true’ me. I hope that audiences know me for who I am now.”
The complexity of the business world is hard to fathom for some
Michael Miu’s nickname ‘Third Brother’ is actually the name of a character he portrayed in the 1988 triad-themed film <>; after the film debuted, people started calling him ‘Third Brother’ in real life as well. Even after Michael became a successful businessman and a prominent figure in the business world, many people still continued to affectionately call him ‘Third Brother’. Michael often jokes about this and constantly tells people: “As long as you don’t call me ‘Big Brother’, then it’s fine – being called ‘Big Brother’ is a dangerous thing!”
After 1983’s 《Legend of the Condor Heroes》, Michael starred in numerous series and was heavily promoted by TVB. Yet, when his acting career was at its peak, Michael decided to leave the industry and enter the business world, successfully taking over the biggest eyeglasses chain store in HK and running the business for more than a decade. Due to his success in the business world, it is said that Michael is the HK entertainment industry’s very first multi-millionaire.
Throughout the past 2 decades, there have been various ‘rumors’ about Michael’s decision to leave the entertainment industry at the peak of his career – some say that it was due to Barbara Yung’s death, others say that he was ‘frozen’ by TVB so he had no choice but leave, and still others claim that built up animosity between the 5 Tigers triggered his decision to split. The truth, as Michael reveals, is no where close to what was rumored. In reality, Michael didn’t just brazenly abandon his acting career and go into business – actually, back when he was filming series, he was already helping out with the family business on the side [TN: his family owned an eyeglasses business]. One day, he discovered that there was potential with the family business and at the same time, his acting career was bottlenecked, so he decided to let go of his acting career: “Actually, there was never really a ‘peak’ in my acting career – at the time, I felt that there wasn’t much room for further development in my acting and wasn’t sure how to keep going down that path; I was lost without a sense of direction. Coincidentally, the family eyeglasses business was going quite well, so naturally, I decided to place more focus there and that’s where I remained for the next 17 years. Having the opportunity to be in a completely different environment and encounter completely different experiences was definitely an eye-opener – it helped me to know myself better and later on, when I returned to the entertainment industry, it also helped me improve in terms of my acting.”
It can be said that the business world is similar to a war zone. With all the complexities and struggles that could take place, these 17 years surely have not been easy for Michael: “HK was very much impacted by the financial crisis as well as SARS – also, in the business world, so many things are profit-driven, plus there is the pressure of maintaining the business – the complexity of the business world can be very difficult for some people to fathom. Fortunately, we were able to survive that period and get through each difficult stage in one piece.”
Doesn’t care about being first or second brother
After the SARS crisis, HK’s economy was greatly affected – during this time, Michael decided to sell his business and return to the entertainment industry: “Having a business is a gamble – the competition in the market can get very intense and when reality set in, it made sense to sell the business. Also, at the same time, I was invited to participate in a filming project, plus a lot of people have been asking when I would return to the industry, so I thought, why not? Besides, I discovered that I still had an interest in acting. A lot of people say that the entertainment industry is complicated, but in my opinion, nothing can be more complicated than the business world. After experiencing so many ups and downs in the business world, being an actor is way easier and more relaxing in comparisons.”
But the landscape of today’s entertainment industry in HK has changed and has given rise to a new generation of artists. Amongst the ‘Five Tigers’, Tony Leung and Andy Lau have had the most successful acting careers, with both being multiple ‘Best Actor’ winners and maintaining their immense popularity even today. After being away for so long, how does Michael compare to his Tiger brothers in popularity? Actually, Michael does not care about this: “Returning anew, I realized the entire environment and landscape had changed, but it actually felt very refreshing – I was like a newbie entering the industry for the first time. I didn’t feel any apprehension, in fact, it felt quite casual and unrestrained – who cares about being a first brother or second brother? The important thing is doing your own job well. As actors, we are all friends – if we place too much importance on fame and fortune and put that in front of all else, it would be difficult to get through each day. I won’t put that type of pressure on myself – if all day long, I’m comparing myself to them and lamenting why someone has an award and I don’t, I would never be happy. I would much rather maintain a relaxed, casual attitude and happily enjoy each day!”

The complexity of the business world is hard to fathom for some
Michael Miu’s nickname ‘Third Brother’ is actually the name of a character he portrayed in the 1988 triad-themed film <

My Thoughts on “Born Rich 富貴門"
This was my most anticipated series of 2009, as I absolutely love the cast (both lead and supporting) and hadn't seen most of the leads (Ray, Jamie, Kenix, Gallen, Anita) as well as supporting artists (Benz, Ming Sir, etc.) in series in a long time, so was looking forward to their 'comeback' performances.....despite the lack of promotion from TVB's side (because as well all know, all of the promotion went to BTROC instead), I still was hopeful that it would be good. Even after the series aired in HK last year and there were tons of negative feedback on it, I was still a little optimistic and wanted to at least watch it for myself to see if it truly sucked as much as people said it did.
After finally watching this series, all I can say is: boy, was I hugely disappointed!!!
The script for the series absolutely sucked!!! Most of the storyline made no sense and was very hard to follow. I had actually missed quite a few episodes here and there, but didn't bother re-watching because I felt as though nothing of significance occurred in those episodes to warrant my going back and 'catching up'. Also, alot of the parts dragged out way too much (like the whole love triangle thing between Ray, Jamie, and Kenix), and ended up being boring.
For me, I felt like TVB just took a bunch of talented artists and threw them all together in a series for the heck of it, with no decent storyline or plot to carry the series -- sort of like one of those Taiwanese Idol dramas but except all the 'idols' are middle-aged or older and can truly act. And I realize now what made the storyline so hard to follow was that there were too many sub-storylines going on at the same time, some of which weren't really related to each other (kind of like a 'hodge-podge' of storylines mixed together). I mean, was it really necessary to have all those complicated relationships in there? If you really take apart each character, all of them had more than 1 relationship, whether it was a family relationship or a romantic one, however most of the relationships were under-developed (probably because there wasn't enough time or room in the script to develop them with so much stuff in there).
For example:
Gallen -- family relationship with Kenneth (his real brother), Ray (his 'fake' brother), Anita (his 'fake' sister), Nancy (his 'fake' step-mother); and romantic relationship with Anita (who is not truly his sister, but only he knows that and of course she doesn't, which tortures her throughout the series) as well as Sharon (who is pretty much a 'stand-in' for Anita, since he doesn't love her at all).
Ray -- family relationship with Gallen (his 'fake' brother), Anita (real sister), Nancy (mother), his kids; and romantic relationship with Jamie (his wife) and Kenix (extra-marital affair that turns into actual relationship after he and Jamie end up divorcing).
Anita -- family relationship with Ray, Nancy, Jamie, Gallen and romantic relationship with Gallen (whom she truly loves but can't be with) and Joe (whom I still can't tell whether she truly loves or not).
And THAT'S just scratching the surface! All the other characters have very similar complicated relationships....
Bottom line is that the writers and producer tried TOO HARD to cram as much material as they could into the series and it ended up backfiring on them, since it made the series way too confusing and difficult to follow (I got confused just trying to list out the above 3 relationships for this post!!!)
Watching this series made me get really pissed off at TVB for wasting such a great cast -- I mean, both the main leads as well as the supporting cast (with the exception of a few people) are awesome actors / actresses in their own right and have many great performances / series to their credit. Plus, like I said earlier, I really loved the cast because I grew up watching most of their series and know how much potential these artists have -- so it made it extremely painful for me to watch them put 100% effort in such a poorly written drama (it was so poorly written / put together that even the awesome acting of the artists couldn't save it!!)
I don't think I've ever watched a series with such a true waste of talent! I mean, many of the characters had like NO PURPOSE and were JUST THERE for the sake of being there! For example, Paul Chun (his character would show up every once in a while, but I had no clue what he was there for), Benz Hui and Angelina Lo (I know that they are Sharon's parents in the series, but other than that, they don't have much other significance), Lee Sing Cheung (all I know is that he works for Ray's family and shows up every once in awhile in a few episodes here and there).....I could name a bunch more, but you get the picture....
As if that weren't enough, most of the lead characters were very poorly written as well -- there wasn't much depth to the characters for one, and two, there was nothing about the characters that made them memorable to the audiences....pretty much anyone could have played those characters and it would have probably still come out the same way because the script was so poor (so again, why did they waste those talents???).
Here's my take on a few of the main characters:
Ray's character (Cheuk Yat Yuen / Marcus) -- if ever there were a poorly written character, this one is definitely it! I mean, the poor guy is all over the place -- first he is insistent on finding his long lost brother and getting Nancy to accept him, then when she does, he sort of resents it because Gallen starts to threaten his position in the company (and this is even before he finds out that Gallen is a fake). And he supposedly has the 'perfect' family with a loving wife and smart kids, but then he has an affair with Kenix (whom he supposedly dated prior to being married) and ends up destroying his perfect family and losing his powerful position in the company just so he could be with her. And what about his constant power struggle with Joe? I didn't understand that piece at all because I thought he considered Joe his 'right hand man' -- but then why does he resent the fact that his sister is dating him and tries to ruin their engagement party? It's almost like Ray's character is pulled in a hundred different directions and ends up going nowhere....
Gallen's character (Cheuk Yat Ming / Sa Fu Loi) -- his character in this series really confused me....it seemed to me as though his character is supposed to be both tragic and comedic in a way, but mixed together very poorly. There were several scenes were I saw elements of his comedic "Old Time Buddy" character, but then the rest of the time, he is mostly scheming for money and power. And the whole triangular relationship thing with Sharon and Anita as well as his hatred / jealousy of Joe was sort of ridiculous. But I do have to hand it to Gallen because despite his badly written character, he pulled off the acting piece without a problem -- with his facial expressions and gestures, etc., and the way he is able to show his character's 'evilness masked in goodness' -- very natural and convincing.
Kenix’s character (Tung Ling Chi / Angie) – Kenix is one of my favorite actresses, but her character in this series totally sucked -- her acting was a bit forced at certain points too (though I don't know if it was because the character was so poorly written or she was dealing with issues in her personal life that may have affected her acting). I really felt that the part where her character tries to ‘seduce’ Ray by pretending to be heartbroken over breaking up with her boyfriend, then talking her way into moving in with the Cheuk family was extremely cheesy (not to mention that it didn’t make any sense whatsoever). And I hated her physical appearance -- I've always thought of Kenix as pretty, but she looked really scary in this series...way too skinny to the point of being skeletal and the makeup didn't help any either.
Anita’s character (Cheuk Yat Sum / Rene) – to be honest, Anita’s character in this series was very bland – nothing special, nothing interesting, nothing memorable. I was actually a bit disappointed with Anita’s performance in this series because to be honest, I really expected more from her – after all, she IS the film industry’s Best Actress winner (multiple times)….though I do attribute a lot of it to the poorly written character, I still think that she could have put a little more effort. I do like Anita as a person (and as a movie actress), however I just feel that she made the wrong move by going back to television – she was way better off in the film industry, where she excelled.
Jamie’s character (Hor Tseuk Nin / Connie) – amazingly, my feelings are neutral towards Jamie’s character, but I think that’s because I really did not pay a whole lot of attention to her character, since it was another one of those typical ‘strong woman’ roles. Or it could be that I got so confused with all the rest of the intermixing storylines that I did not have the energy anymore to pick apart her character or performance. All I really remember is that – like Anita’s character – Jamie’s character was not that memorable either.
Though there are probably a lot more things to say about this series, I don’t feel it is necessary to go more into it, since the rest of my feedback is pretty much the same as what I expressed above.
Overall, this was a very disappointing series that I probably would not watch again, no matter how much I like the cast – it was enough torture sitting through this series the first time…I definitely don’t need to go through it a second time!
After finally watching this series, all I can say is: boy, was I hugely disappointed!!!

The Green Room (今日VIP): Interview with Michael Miu and Felix Wong – PART 1
Just finished watching the episode of The Green Room where Carlo Ng Kar Lok interviews Michael Miu and Felix Wong a few days before “Gun Metal Grey” is slated to air.
Since I’m an 80s girl and a 5 Tigers fan (plus I love interview shows), I definitely paid attention to the interview so I could absorb what Felix and Michael had to say about their experiences filming GMG.
Some highlights from the episode:
.> I love Michael and Felix’s chemistry – it’s obvious that they have a long-time friendship (30 years!) and get together often in their personal lives, as they are very comfortable around each other. It was funny how they were able to finish each other’s sentences at certain points during the interview – in fact, it didn’t feel like a formal interview at all…instead, it felt like 3 friends (they’re good friends with Carlo as well) hanging out and talking.
.> Felix started off by recounting the story of how he came about agreeing to film GMG after 9 years away from the small screen. I was cracking up big time during this part because it was hilarious how Felix kept getting interrupted by Michael and how they kept joking with each other when telling the story. The story of how it occurred is quite funny!
.> As the story goes, Michael actually really wanted Felix to film GMG with him, but he knew that if he personally asked, Felix wouldn’t do it (Felix jokingly told the story of how Michael would always win his money whenever they played snooker and so Felix would pretend to get mad and out of ‘revenge’, refuse to do anything for him…lol!!). Therefore, Michael asked his wife Jamie (also good friends with Felix) to go talk to him and persuade him. So one day, Jamie went over to Felix’s house (apparently, Michael and Felix are ‘neighbors’ as well, since they live very close to each other), put on a very serious expression, and told him that she really needs his help. Felix thought at first that she needed help in terms of money or some other favor (the part where he says he doesn’t have any money was hilarious!), but it turns out she wanted him to consider filming a series with Michael.
.> As Felix was recounting the story, Michael interrupted at certain points to clarify some parts (like when Felix said there were 2 cop characters and he ended up portraying Stone Sir – Michael reminded him that he LET him choose which character he wanted to be because he so desperately wanted him to do the series – it was funny how Michael pulled out all the stops and agreed to do anything Felix wanted as long as he agreed to film the series).
.> When Felix was recounting the story of how Michael/Jamie convinced him to film GMG, he was saying how Jamie started off by saying "Hey, Baldie....", then Michael interrupts and tells him to tell everyone where that nickname came from (another funny moment!). Felix said that he got that nickname because back in the days, he filmed alot of ancient series and for almost every single one, he had to shave his head (practically the only ones he didn't have to shave his head for were the modern ones....lol!)....so Michael and Jamie took to calling him "Baldie" from that time on.
.> Michael kept teasing Felix on how he has such an 'easy, leisurely' life now (drinks tea, cuts the grass, takes care of rabbits, etc.)....hahahaha....cute!
.> During the interview, Michael revealed a "secret" behind how Felix came about returning to the small screen. Those of us who have raved on and on about how much we love Felix and enjoy seeing him on the small screen again (I'm one of them!!) can actually thank veteran actor (and the 2nd of my two idols) Chow Yun Fat!! Fat Gor is very good friends with Michael and Felix and get together quite often to 'drink tea' and go for walks in the mountains (Michael teased Felix that he is actually living that type of leisurely life right now). One day, after they went for a long walk in the mountains, Fat Gor told Felix that he should consider filming series again, since he's good at it and it's been so long....Michael jokingly recounted how Fat Gor pretty much told Felix that if he doesn't put those acting skills to use again and film another series, he will disown him as a friend (hahaha -- actually, Fat Gor didn't say that last part -- Michael was actually just kidding -- but Fat Gor did tell Felix that he should do another series). So when Michael heard this (he was there I assume), that's when he quickly got to work figuring out how he was going to convince his buddy to film another series.
.> Michael also revealed that when Felix films series (or anything for that matter), he never brings the script with him -- in fact, he leaves the script at home. Yet, as soon as the cameras roll, Felix has no problems doing his lines (except for this one time when the script changed and Felix wasn't aware). Michael kept saying how amazed he was that Felix is able to do that. Felix said that it goes back to his acting class days, as that was the way he was trained and that's actually the way alot of the veteran artists did things. He also said that it was actually Dodo (Carol) Cheng who opened his eyes to that because she always did it when filming series -- back in the early 80s when they filmed "The Lonely Hunter" together (he was a newbie back then), she told him that they are not allowed to have scripts on set and so took his script and threw it out of the studio. Since then, he's trained himself to memorize all his lines at home and not bring his script to work with him. (I actually already knew about this 'trait' of Felix's through weibo -- but it was awesome to hear him recount the story again -- plus I didn't know the part about Dodo).
.> Felix kept referring to himself as a "Newbie" to TVB (lol)....newbie or not, as Michael pointed out, the newer generation artists definitely have alot of respect for him -- especially those he worked with in GMG (i.e.: Oscar Leung, Grace Wong, Nancy Wu, etc.)
.> It was so cute how Michael would be the 'big brother' (though technically Felix entered the industry before Michael) for Felix during the filming of GMG. Michael said that he had promised Felix that he would 'take good care of him' (it was also one of the reasons why Felix agreed to comeback).....therefore, whenever Felix came across an issue while filming, he would let Michael know and Michael would work it out for him (not because Felix was afraid to say anything, but because he hasn't been back to TVB in 9 years and so was less familiar with things -- plus he didn't want to impose on others)
.> With GMG being a cop series, there are bound to be dangerous scenes chase scenes, so host Carlo asked Michael and Felix about the most dangerous scenes they had to film for the series and whether stunt doubles were used. Felix described this one scene where he had to jump off a building in order to chase a crook -- the way he described the shooting of that scene was absolutely hilarious!!! I won't go into detail about it here, since I wouldn't be able to do justice to it (gotta hear him describe it himself)...
.> All in all, the interview was a trip down memory lane for me because Felix and Michael also recounted how things were like during their generation (the senior artists / elders would teach the newbies how to act / give them pointers whereas now people pretty much do their own thing, etc.)
To be Continued (the interview is a two-parter)…..
