Additional Update on HKTV Launch: Series Titles, Synopsis, and Trailers ** Plot Summaries updated ***

As a follow-up to my previous post about HKTV's official launch, below are the details on the 16 series that they've released information on so far -- the information is taken directly from HKTV's website (as credited below).

Obviously HKTV's artists and production crew have been hard at work, as 16 series is actually quite a lot -- however one thing I do want to say is that I know for sure there are a few more series HKTV filmed but didn't release the trailer clips for (like that horror series starring Dominic Lam and Noelle Leung for example).  I'm actually curious to know the reason for holding back those series (perhaps further touch-up/editing is needed?).

At any rate, I'm happy to see that HKTV is finally making some headway with their launch and sincerely hope that things will go smoothly this time around.  And I am definitely looking forward to watching a few of their series.  Even though some of the series don't interest me much (mainly because I'm not keen on the particular genre), there are quite a few that I know I will enjoy.  Besides, I absolutely appreciate the variety that HKTV has to offer, as all 16 series are completely different in terms of genre, theme, and cast to some extent, plus the creativity with some of the series such as pushing the envelope with real life surgery scenes, graphic action scenes, realistic makeup, the movie-like quality of the scenes, etc. (TVB -- are you guys taking notes????).

Ok, I'll stop the ranting now and get to the "real action"....

Enjoy!!

P.S.:  The series are not listed in any particular order.  Also, the English and Chinese titles are the "official" series titles as listed on HKTV's posters and trailer clip summaries.

P.P.S:  I'm still working through the translations on the plot summaries.  There are a few that I already translated several years back when the series commenced filming and since the summaries haven't changed, I posted those translations below.  The remaining translations will be posted by this weekend.

Ultimately, the 'root cause' of alot of illnesses does not stray far from what we call 'humanity' (renxing)!

Utilizing the story of a plastic surgeon joining a franchised medical treatment conglomerate as basis and adding in a 'discussion' of a few recent controversial 'hot topics', the series will attempt to critique the value system of mainstream modern society in the hopes of inspring the general public to reflect on the definition of 'beauty' and how it relates to their own value system. But if those boundaries are broken through and cops collaborate with crooks, the investigative process as well as the probability of cracking the case becomes limitlessly greater. A 12 year undercover agent living on the edge, a hot-tempered cop who once broke out of jail after he was framed for crime, a ‘King of Robbers’ who was once jailed for a crime he didn’t commit and now specializes in robbing crooks, a ‘spinster’ female cop who had never fired a single shot in her life and relies on her wits as well as life experiences to ‘figure out’ criminals, a fugitive from the law who is obsessed with female cops but always puts righteousness ahead of all else, and finally a high-ranking female officer who is also a military weapons expert – together, they will match wits as well as match strength. Out of this will come not only love, hate, and sparks, it will also break all boundaries – joining forces to crack cold cases and locate criminals, it creates an entirely different battlefield. The Menu (導火新聞)

Director:  Fong Chun Wah (方俊華)

Plot Summary:

Supervising and maintaining an orderly society has always been a responsibility that the Media should partake in and support –however, the perception of the news media is oftentimes synonymous with the promotion of violence, sex, bloodiness, and overall havoc in society.  The series will revolve around 3 female news agency workers with very different philosophies on life who, in efforts to gather material for publication of their free newspaper Smart Post (囧報), engage in nearly daily arguments and conflicts.  The chief editor of the newspaper is a woman driven by profit who does not hesitate in publishing unscrupulous, sensationalist reports, even if it means sacrificing moral reporting standards and ethics.  At the same time, the agency’s supervisory staff and reporters are filled with an almost patriotic desire to make the voices of the weak and vulnerable in society heard loud and clear, while simultaneously bringing to light society’s many injustices.  In the face of reality – that is, a commercialized society and the injustices that go along with it -- a newspaper that even those in the same industry look down upon, continues to persevere;  ultimately motivated by different goals, its staff continues to struggle daily to reveal – and, in some cases, hide – the truth.  In such a pressure-filled environment, how will the news agency’s staff uphold righteousness while at the same time protect their own reporting aspirations?

Matters that seem trivial in the eyes of adults are oftentimes matters of utmost importance in children’s hearts.   This series looks at the vast world we live in through the eyes of children and show how they follow their pure yet determined hearts to realize these important ‘trivial’ matters.  In doing so, they also attempt to help the adults in their lives understand that they shouldn’t try to force their own methods on their children – instead they should allow children their freedom to let their own dreams soar!

The story revolves around a group of fourth year elementary school students who are on the brink of entering a higher grade level, yet lack the independence to truly think on their own.  In these students’ lives, things happen that often render adults helpless, not knowing whether to laugh or cry, yet at the same time, have the ability to move people’s hearts with their sincerity and innocence.

Cast:  Jason Chan (陳柏宇), Joman Chiang (蔣祖曼), Alan Luk (陸駿光), Meiki Wong (黃美棋), Jan Tse (謝芷倫), Cherry Pau (鮑康兒), Lui Hei (呂熙)

Plot Summary:

Sex is definitely a very complicated learning experience.  With all the complexities involved – such as communication between two individuals, a couple’s preferences and inclinations, concerns amongst family members, one’s philosophy on life, etc. – we definitely shouldn’t underestimate the impact that “sex” has on people’s lives and the importance it bears.

Sexpedia is a series that uses real life cases as a blueprint to bring out the story of 3 main characters who have very distinct personalities but undergo similarly “unusual” experiences:  one character is a male virgin who, after being oppressed his entire life, deeply believes that he only has one chance in life to make love to a woman; another character is a female who thinks that having a sexual impediment means that she is not worthy of being loved; the third is a divorced male who is overly confident about his sexual experience, yet actually knows nothing about how to please a woman.

The stories of these 3 characters weave together in this romantic comedy that takes a daring, brazen yet light-hearted and humorous approach to draw audiences into an intimate discussion about sex and love.

Plot Summary:

Paranormal Mind is a supernatural-themed detective series – however the ‘supernatural’ won’t be the traditional ghosts and spirits-theme that audiences are used to seeing. Rather, it will utilize ‘super’ scientific concepts as well as realistic methods to investigate a variety of mysterious, unusual cases. The series will revolve around the main character Hung Gei Yuen (Felix Wong) -- a former high-ranking police inspector who, after being traumatized by the mysterious death of his son, acquires the hidden ability to capture and enter other people’s subconscious, as he deeply believes that his son was actually murdered in the ‘inner confines of the subconscious’! At the same time, he starts to display signs of having a split personality and works hard to study about the ‘hidden subconscious’ in the hopes of one day finding his son’s killer.

Each main character in this series will have some sort of ‘hidden ability’ that makes them different from other people. Even though each of them will have a ‘regrettable flaw’ and perhaps even be viewed by society as being ‘abnormal’ or ‘weird’, this does not affect their self-esteem. In fact, they are able to turn this ‘regrettable flaw’ into a ‘hidden ability’ and use it to help them solve many mysterious cases.

But for someone who doesn’t have any dreams or aspirations, what is the point of living a life of such uselessness? The series will explore how the main characters, while going through a low period in their lives, will encounter a situation that gives them the opportunity to change history – however, once the history is changed, they discover that their lives did not become better than it was before. This makes them realize that instead of constantly fretting about the past, why not seize the opportunities they have presently and live life to the fullest?

Plot Summary:

In our childhood, most of us probably fantasized about being the prince or princess from those fairytale stories we often listened to; once grown up however, we realize that we can only be ‘ordinary’ people living in the real world.   Choosing a girlfriend involves considering certain external factors while the primary criteria in choosing a boyfriend is that he must own a house, a car, and have a stable career.  Thinking on a deeper level, does anyone follow the dreams in their hearts anymore?

This series’ love story revolves around a young CEO played by Kelvin Kwan (關楚耀) and his relationship with female leads Kate Yeung (楊淇) and Evelyn Choi (蔡穎恩) – add to this the talent of singer William So (蘇永康), whose singing voice accompanies the entire story.  With a portion of the filming completed on location in Okinawa, Japan, this series brings together elements of music, dance, and acting into a musical ensemble drama that is definitely worthy of anticipation!

The Wicked League (惡毒老人同)

Director:  Kwan Shu Ming  (關樹明)
Creative Producer:  Choi Suk Yan (蔡淑賢)
Script Supervisor:  Alex Pau (鮑偉聰)

Plot Summary:

As the saying goes: “having an elder at home is a treasure to the family”.  However, in reality, many elderly are oftentimes targets of discrimination.  The 5 main elderly characters in this series are the epitome of this, as they are constantly looked down upon by their family, friends, and even co-workers.  During a chance encounter, the 5 of them come together and decide to ‘take revenge’ on all those who’ve looked down upon them, so they join forces to form “The Wicked League”.

This series utilizes light-hearted black humor to bring forth some of the problems and challenges that the elderly face in today’s society, with the hope that audiences can develop a better understanding of the elderly in their own lives and treat them better.

    > I lol'ed at Incredible Mama (我阿媽係黑玫瑰) ...that's a comedy series..

    > Doom+5 (末日+5) ... errr.. o_O sci-fi ?? No idea what the plot from the trailer

    > Sexpedia (大眾情性) - this one sounds like a movie than a drama ..but i think they intended to be a social family drama. Question is will it be sustainable to watch as a drama.

    > The Menu (導火新聞線) - this is also applicable to the current situation in HK. Shld be quite interesting.

    > Night Shift (夜班) - This is interesting too.. PTU the drama... I always like cop story. It is different from Borderline, also a cop story.

    1. @fangorn:   I have similar sentiments as you on a few of the series.  Here are my comments:

Incredible Mama – I wasn’t interested in this series at all in the beginning, but after watching the trailer, it seems like a series I might watch, if just for the comedic element.  The premise of the series sort of reminds me of TVB’s “Fly With Me” (the one with Ada Choi), except with “older” artists.  I like Kara Hui well enough as an actress and rarely get to see her in a comedy, so I probably give this one a try, even though I’m not too keen on that type of series.

Night Shift – I definitely want to watch this one as well, especially after I read about how they filmed this -- to get the most realistic effect possible, the production crew filmed this series in real life locations over the span of 30 days, filming ONLY at night.  Back when they were filming, Frankie talked about how he had to completely shift his sleep schedule for a month, since there were only a limited number of hours during the night that they could film….he was very grateful to his family for accommodating him for that period of time when their schedules were turned upside down for a month.

Doom+5 – I was actually trying to figure this series out as well.  From what I’ve read of the plot and the little that came out during the filming process, I think this is a sci-fi / fantasy themed series about the end of the world (or something along those lines).  Not exactly my type of series (I’m not info sci-fi at all), but since it stars Sunny Chan, I might still end up giving it a go.  I don’t know…we’ll see.

The Menu – this is actually the 3rd series I’ve been wanting to watch (after Borderline and The Election).  The extended trailer that HKTV released last year for this series was pretty intense and really got me interested in the series.  Plus I applaud HKTV for going where TVB does not dare to go (I had mentioned this in other forums, but TVB actually had the opportunity to make this same series, but the management banned the idea because it was too “controversial” and they were afraid it would negatively impact their relationship with certain Media outlets).  I’m not too keen on the cast (though I’m interested in seeing how Noelle Leung handles the villain role, since this is a huge departure from her typecasted “good girl” roles at TVB) – but I intend on giving this one a “go”….

Sexpedia – not interested in this one at all, actually.  But yes, I also question whether this will be sustainable as an actual series, since it doesn’t sound like something that can be dragged on for 10 or 15 episodes (I have no clue how long this series is by the way)…

  2. sexpedia is not a social family drama. jason chan talks about having erectile dysfunction in the trailer.

Night Shift also reminded me of PTU.

  3. A few comments on some of the other series:

The Wicked League – I’m actually interested in watching this one.  I know, some people are probably thinking that it’s just a bunch of old people being senile, but the trailer was actually kind of funny – plus I grew up watching almost all of the senior, veteran artists who have major roles in the series and I have confidence in them being able to pull this off into a good comedy.  I’m sure my mom will love this series too, since most of the actors/actresses in the series are from her time…

Beyond the Rainbow – to be honest, the 1 minute trailer on the website doesn’t really do justice to this series (need to watch the extended trailer they released last year to get more of a feel for the series).  Though I’m not too keen on the theme or story, I will probably watch this series for the acting, since the cast consists of so many talented actors/actresses (for example: it will be interesting to see Ha Yu and Paw Hee Ching – 2 veteran artists with great acting talent -- battle acting chops).

To Be or Not to Be – I’m surprised not many people mentioned this one.  I’m not a fan of Maggie or Prudence but both are very capable actresses whom I don’t mind watching onscreen.   And I do like the simplicity of the background story which sounds like it will rely a lot on the acting of the cast to bring out the flavor of the series.  Oh and I’m interested in watching Poon Chan Leung’s performance – I know he is a respected, award-winning stage actor (sort of along the lines of Tse Kwan Ho), but never saw him perform, so this will be my chance to see how he does.

Side note – earlier in my post, I had mentioned about the horror series that HKTV had filmed but didn’t include as part of the batch eligible to be voted on.  Well, while putting this post together, I found that HKTV does have the 1 minute trailer clip for the series up on their website, complete with cast list and summary….makes me wonder why they didn’t include it (to be honest, the clip isn’t that scary – plus I already saw a different version of the clip last year and it really wasn’t too graphic, so not sure what the big deal is….maybe they think that HK audiences won’t accept it?).

  5. lol @llwy12 I'm a scifi fan but Doom 5+ trailer just looks confusing. Though I might still watch it just for Sunny who barely appeared in the trailer itself. I'm more looking forward to Sunny's role in the sequel to Borderline Police!

    1. @sport3888: I just posted the translated summary for Doom+5 -- it might clarify things a bit, since the trailer itself was so confusing. After reading the summary, the premise does sound interesting, but it's obviously going to be a sci-fi theme. I can't tell how big of a role Sunny will have though....we'll have to see once the series actually airs...

    2. @llwy12 Thanks I just read Doom's trailer and it makes so much more sense. Although i still don't get what Sunny's role since he's the one who announces the end of the world line with old makeup.

    1. @Anonymous: So it looks like Astro is working in collaboration with HKTV to air their series in South Asia, New Zealand, and Australia (at least that's what the article says). WHAT?!?!?! Why can't U.S. do the same thing???

    2. Cool!!! I have Astro-On-The-Go..now I can subscribe to the drama!!!

    3. @llwy12: I'm sure they'll announce something for the US soon. I'm worried about Canada though. Fairchild is the biggest Chinese network in Canada and TVB has a 20% stake in the station. Even if they end up buying the rights to HKTV shows, I have a feeling they're going to air HKTV shows in graveyard slots (late night weekends) like they used to do with ATV shows back in the late 90s and early 2000s.

      Delete
    4. really!? I never knew they had a 20% stake! Canada has always been slow on introducing 'new' stuff...so I don't have high hopes. I hope I can just watch through the internet or I hope they can lift the restrictions on the hktv apps (just for HK right now)

      Delete
    5. I'm hoping that the Chinese networks in the U.S. will come up with something as well -- though I seriously doubt it. There's a better chance of HKTV lifting the regional restrictions on their apps and internet viewing capabilities than for the actual television networks in the U.S. to even bother doing something similar to what Astro is doing.

The one good thing is that it looks like HKTV is diligently trying to come up with a solution for overseas audiences (this is the "gist" I've gotten from reading through all the stuff on their Facebook and Weibo pages)...hopefully they get things sorted out before the launch.

    6. BUT nowadays most familIES in US uses TV Pad Box to watch TVB series or Chinese shows. There really isn't any Chinese networks in US that are that influential, not that I know of.

I think Ricky Wong's most direct way to get his series overseas is to create a deal with TV Pad. That's assuming the TVB series currently airing on TV are "legal".

    7. Either that or make something for Apple TV.

  7. llwy12, long time no see! I haven't really been actively blogging and I've missed out on some stuff due to illness and life, in general.

Anyway, I just saw the voting poll for which HKTV. I was actually trying to vote, until I saw the disclaimer at the bottom that said I was outside HK. As for Astro bringing HKTV to NZ, well... I'm not entirely sure about that. Though Astro does bring in a lot of old HK dramas for programming, it is limited to one channel where I'm at. I'm pretty sure that has to do with the TVB distributor, WTV, which tries to limit its programming to a few 'popular' channels and programs. Like you said, I'm pretty sure that even if they do get it, they'll be airing those shows in graveyard slots.

Though on a sidenote, I am quite enjoying Come On Cousin. But to be honest, I feel like I've seen too many police/cop/law enforcement dramas this year. I also don't feel like watching a series that puts in so many characters to fluff up the weak storyline (like we're not going to notice).

Still, maybe it's a new era for HKTV. Bring back the competition.

    1. @TAQ: Hi there, my friend! Long time not see (talk) indeed. I hope things have been well (though I got a bit worried there when I saw the word "illness" in your post...hope it's nothing serious...).

In terms of the voting -- hmm, that's odd? I was able to vote even though I'm outside of HK (I don't recall seeing any error message or anything saying that I couldn't vote...it let me go through without restriction...I even got a "thank you" message for voting, so I'm assuming my vote counted....)

Like I said earlier in one of my replies above, I'm really not banking too much on the actual overseas TV stations / networks to do too much in terms of bringing HKTV's series to our countries. I think we're all probably better off watching on the internet or via apps (when HKTV lifts the regional restrictions).

I'm also enjoying Come On Cousin too, but only certain parts of it...the characters that I'm annoyed with I've been pretty much skipping their scenes....and to be honest, I'm more interested in the "nostalgia" component to the series (the old songs that they incorporate, the "inside jokes" about the entertainment industry, the witty references to people/places/events from the past, etc.)...that's pretty much why I've continued to watch the series....if it wasn't for that stuff, I probably would have given up by now. (And for the record, I like Inbound Troubles way way way better -- the sequel is definitely not living up to the original at the moment...).

  8. @TAQ: Looks like Astro will air HKTV shows during primetime and not during the graveyard hours. There's hope yet.

    2. now tvb is making a series revolving around the same topic with sharon chan and eddie cheung . coincidence?

      Delete
    3. @huama: Yup...not only that....TV is making a vampire series as well (the one with Kevin Cheng and Kay Tse).....

Personally, the way I see it....when it comes to TVB, there is no such thing as "coincidence"....

      Delete
    4. TVB always copied ATV series in the past and reaped the benefits with high ratings while the later station suffered. However this time around TVB will definitely get called out for their copying but HKTV is alot more popular! Not to mention TVB's quality and cast will pale in comparison. The reason why HKTV"s vampire series was grabbing so much support and attention form younger audience including myself was because of Danson Tang! At the very least TVB could've spent some more money finding another Taiwan Idol to compete! Sorry but who wants to watch 40/30 year old Kevin and Kay in a vampire series?!

      Delete
    5. @sport3888: Agreed...though the other problem is that TVB oftentimes doesn't do a good job of "copying" because at the end of the day, they still apply their own "formula" and standards to it.

Sure, some people say that HKTV "copied" some of their series from Hollywood -- but hey, at least HKTV was sincere about it. Not only did they buy equipment used in Hollywood movies, they also had their production team study up on the way TV series are produced here in the U.S. and modeled their filming methods after American series based on what they learned. And, the important part is that they tell audiences outright what they are doing rather than try to hide everything like TVB normally does....

      Delete
    6. @sport3888: I actually wouldn't mind watching Kevin and Kay in a vampire series ala True Blood or Interview with a Vampire. But since it's TVB, it's going to be very corny, immature and cheap looking. I don't even mind TVB's production values at times, it's just that their presentation and writing is very lame and they rehash the same stories/formulas over and over in different settings. There's a love triangle, there's a misunderstanding in between the two leads and then one of the leads is accused of doing something wrong, then love prevails all and everything is wrapped up in a neat little package...it just gets boring and tiring to watch.

  11. sorry, llwy12, i know this is off-topic but I don't know of other way...

Have u heard that Jacky will be having concerts to celebrate his 30th year next year in HK coliseum? I am wondering do you have any info, especially, when to book tickets and such?

    ReplyDelete
  12. @fangorn: No problem! I don't mind the off-topic question (though if you'd like, you can also leave a message on my chatbox or email me at llsmusings@yahoo.com)

In any case, to answer your question...Yes, Jacky will be holding another world tour concert next year, however the reports about him holding the HK leg of the tour at HKC in May are false (I'm actually kind of disappointed in Mingpao for reporting that, though to their credit, they did say "rumored" in their original report, it's just other media outlets took that part out when they repeated the news). Jacky himself said in a recent radio interview that his concert will likely be delayed due to his album being delayed (originally his album was going to be released in October and his concert would start mid 2015, but now his album won't be released until next month, which means his concert likely won't start until closer to end of year 2015).

No worries though...once the dates and venues are officially announced, I will post on my blog liked I`ve done in the past.

Oh, have u heard? I think Election won the vote... but I heard that they will also releasing Borderline ^_^

    2. @fangorn: No problem! :-)

Yes, I heard that Election won the vote (by a huge margin) and Borderline came in second. But it actually doesn't matter too much, since HKTV will be airing The Election and Borderline simultaneously anyway (according to their schedule, they will air 2 hours of their own dramas each day back to back).

    3. That's not a bad idea cause unlike Borderline, Election isn't an action packed series so I doubt viewers would want to chase it every single weekday. In fact I won't be surprised if HKTV went the US and Japan route of only airing 1 episode per week. With US I'm usually watching several shows per week even though they only air 1 episode per week. Of course that's the benefit of having many tv stations in the US providing variety and quality series for audience. I hope HK will become the same very soon. The way TVB churns out series like a factory and films it in a "factory" ahem "set" is so outdated!
